  • Title of the problem or suggestion: Login change
  • Type of Suggestion: Suggestion for the Game
  • Location: Homepage

Description:
Currently we have a login dialog that requires clicking to use. The universe select button defaults at nothing, and you must choose between Aerilon or Beta. This is inefficient and takes extra time to login, whereas most browsers can automatically fill in the information and make it a one step process. My suggestion is to make the default option Aerilon, which will benefit the greatest number of players, whereas the Beta players will be in no way inconvienenced as they already must click to select their universe. To further optimize this, a cookie could be used to store which universe was played last by the user, allowing the default option to be whichever server is used, making it easier for everyone, no matter how many universes are implemented. This however may be more difficult to code.

Summary:
Give positive values for the game and players:
  • Speeds up logins and takes less actions
  • Makes it easier for players to get into the game quickly

Give possible negative values for the game and players:
  • If only the first portion can be implemented, it will not provide significant help should the number of universes expand greatly
  • May or may not be possible depending on how the game is made

Along with this same idea it would be nice to have to option of selecting whether your accessing OR from a public or private PC. If you selected private you could stay logged it. Many sites have this option. The default of course would being public with access set as it currently is. This would save players who log in frequently from a PC no one else has access to a lot of time.

I think he means that we should add a feature that allows people to remain logged in for long periods of time. Most sites do this, including most games and social sites like Facebook. You simply type in the URL and you're already logged in!

I think this was avoided as the game updates in real time; it's why you get kicked off after a period of inactivity. It would be possible to change, but I think it's done that way as a feature, to reduce server load. To make it work you would need to have it so that if you were logged in to a server when visiting the page again it will log you in, but it would still kick you out after the inactivity period and require you to visit a page to log you back in and get you connected to the real-time updating.

A bit complex, different from how most web pages handle it, but physically possible at least.

If that is the issue and server load is a concern, then I would rather have to login each time as we do now than to load the server down farther!

As a web developer I can assure you that this has nothing to do with the server load. When the server "kicks you" it's just your login session being time-outed. It's just the matter of persisting the cookie needed for the login. Having to login every 20 minutes is very annoying. "Remember me" check box should have been there from the begging because it is very easy to implement.

And one more thing, so I don't open another thread :P Please remove the password character limitations. Who thought it would be a good idea to only allow alphanumeric characters for the password? A strong password always includes special characters.

Totally agree!! My browser remembers my username and password so I don't have to type that in each time but having to select the universe each time really gets on my nerves. Some web interfaces allow an option that you can check stating that your working from a private computer. Once checked the time-out value is set very high. If not checked it keeps the server 20 minute default. That would be ideal I think.

Yes, allowing only alphanumeric characters in a password only forces insecurity!
